GARUGAKU. (ガル学。) was a 2020 Spring Anime that was showcased on the CharaSta segments of Oha Suta from April 6, 2020 until March 29, 2021. The characters are based on the LDH girl group, Girls2, sharing the same name and appearance from their Chuwapane! promotions.

Succeeding this, it was announced through their March 28 GaruGaku live stream that they would be having a live-action drama following the story of the anime. On June 8, "GaruGaku. ~Girls Garden~" was announced to air from July 7, 2021.[1] Further information on the cast as well as several guests was released June 22 on Oha Suta. As well as this, the poster was revealed.

Following the final episode of Garugaku: Girls Garden, “ガル学II; Garugaku 2” was announced.

St. Girls Square Academy, or Garugaku for short, is a school that raises girls who dream of becoming professional star performers. This school is only open to those who have passed the auditions that have been held around the country. Students who attend here dream of standing on the “Girls Arena”, the gateway to becoming professional performers. However, only one team can stand on that stage.[2]

One year later, south2 have left to study in the United States and west2 have left to study in Asia. But the now 9 member team Girls2 are given a graduation examination assignment by their Principal that will assist in their major debut.

Production[]

The series was announced via OhaSuta on March 3, 2020, making its first appearance in the March issue of the Ciao magazine. The anime series includes famous filmmakers like Takahiko Kyogoku, who directed "Love Live!" as well as participating in other anime series and films. Hirooaki Akagi, director of "Skilled Teaser Takagi" also participated in the production of the anime.[3][4] It was also revealed that Girls2 would provide the opening theme "Centimeter".

Due to COVID-19 pandemic, a temporary suspension of the anime was announced, with rebroadcasts of episodes airing from May 4 onwards.[5] The anime began broadcasting again from July 6 with episode 5. On August 24, it was revealed that the anime would air new episodes on Tuesday as well, starting from August 31. The final Tuesday episode was released on October 27, continuing in November with episodes airing only on Monday. Episode 37 did not air on the Monday, but was postponed for Tuesday instead, with episodes 39 and 40 being pushed back 2 weeks.

The anime was made available on multiple streaming platforms.

Initially announced during Girls2 Online Live 2020, the Anime Live was finally confirmed on January 24, and was set to take place on March 27-28. A complete album was also released on March 24.

On October 2 it was revealed that they will release two different DVD's for both anime (which includes the Anime Live) and the live action, is set to release on December 22, 2021.

  1. The name of the school "St Girls Square" is a pun on the G2 where you can read it as "Girls Squared".
  2. The units are based on the girls’ hometowns.
    1. Yuzuha (Tokyo), Ran (Saitama), and later Toa (Kanagawa), are in East2 as they’re all from the Kantō region.
    2. Misaki (Fukuoka), Kira (Nagasaki) Kurea (Miyazaki) and Youka (Miyazaki) are in South2, as they’re all from the Kyūshū region.
    3. Momoka (Hyogo) and Minami (Hyogo) are in West2, as they’re both from the Kansai region.
  3. On episode 42, Misaki was credited for being a key animator.
    • This was featured during an Oha Suta broadcast a few weeks prior.
  4. The logo of the school is similar to that of Girls2 Gakuen, Girls2 Fan Club prior to it's change to GL2 Family.
